É a primeira novela "gótica" da literatura (no prefácio da segunda edição, o próprio Walpole iria acrescentar-lhe o subtítulo Uma história Gótica). Desde então, o Romance de Terror não parou de atrair leitores do mundo inteiro. Geralmente, é ambientado em cenário lúgubre e desolado: conventos, castelos obscuros e assombrados, cemitérios com seus túmulos envoltos em bruma. Aborda toda série de horrores, mistérios terrificantes, torturas etc. (...)Além de Walpole, podem ser considerados precursores do gênero William Beckford, autor de Vathek, de 1786; Matthew Gregory Lewis, que escreveu The Monk (O monge) em 1796; Clara Reeves, que publicou The Old English Baron (O velho barão inglês) em 1778; Ann Radcliffe, com seu The Mysteries of Udolpho (Os mistérios de Udolpho), de 1794; a Alemanha produziu um dos mais conhecidos romances góticos ou de terror: As Drogas do Diabo (Elixiren des Teufels, 1816) de Hoffmann.
